SUMMARY:MVA and D&E Course | October 2025
DESCRIPTION:This one-day\, hands-on theoretical training course focuses on the surgical management of abortion and miscarriage across gestations. The course specifically focuses on Manual Vacuum Aspiration (MVA) and Dilatation and Evacuation (D&E) techniques. Delegates will be able to sign up for a half day or the full day based on their interest and existing skills. \nMVA is an alternative to electric suction or dilatation and curettage for evacuation of the uterine contents. The MVA procedure is performed with a hand-operated vacuum syringe\, typically under local anaesthetic\, in a treatment room. With the high safety profile of this procedure and the increasing potential for the delivery of uterine evacuation outside of the theatre\, there is a need to improve access to MVA in the UK. In addition to providing a grounding in the MVA procedure\, this course covers the equipment\, staffing\, analgesia and other requirements for surgical uterine evacuation in the outpatient setting. You can access the programme for the MVA Course here. \nD&E is an essential life saving skill in the context of abortion and management of mid-trimester miscarriage and pregnancy complications. This procedure involves the dilation of the cervix followed by removal of uterine contents using instruments\, typically performed under local or general anesthesia. Given its established safety profile there exists a critical need to enhance accessibility to D&E in healthcare settings. In addition to training on the D&E procedure itself\, this course delves into the necessary equipment\, staffing\, anesthesia options\, and logistical requirements essential for the successful execution of surgical uterine evacuation. You can access the programme for the D&E Course here. \nThis course will be beneficial to those who are unfamiliar with surgical management of abortion and miscarriage\, and those in need of an update on the latest evidence. \nBeing a Member Pays!\nBSACP Members are entitled to discounts on all of our activities as part of our membership benefits. SUMMARY:SOLD OUT - Dilatation and Evacuation (D&E) Course | June 2026
DESCRIPTION:Please note that the course is now sold out. If you would like to be added to the list of interested delegates\, please email us at admin@bsacp.org.uk.\nDilatation and Evacuation (D&E) is an essential procedure used in abortion care\, in the management of miscarriage\, and complex pregnancy complications. Despite its strong safety profile and important role in comprehensive reproductive healthcare\, opportunities for structured\, hands-on training in D&E remain limited in many healthcare settings. \nThis full-day course is designed to support clinicians in developing the knowledge\, practical skills and confidence required to provide safe\, high-quality surgical uterine evacuation care. \nThe course combines expert teaching with immersive\, hands-on simulation\, allowing participants to explore the clinical\, technical and professional aspects of D&E provision in a supportive learning environment. Participants will learn from experienced clinicians working in abortion care and will have opportunities to practise key procedural steps using simulation models and to discuss clinical decision-making with faculty. \nThe programme covers the clinical context of abortion past the first trimester\, the technical aspects of D&E procedures\, and the recognition and management of complications. The course also explores the wider professional and service context of abortion care\, including communication\, ethical considerations\, and the practical realities of implementing services within healthcare systems. \nThis course is suitable for clinicians who are new to surgical management of abortion and miscarriage\, as well as those seeking to refresh or update their knowledge and skills in D&E care. \nBeing a Member Pays!\nBSACP Members are entitled to discounts on all of our activities as part of our membership benefits. You can access the discount codes here. You will need to be logged in to your profile to access the codes. The discount amount is close to the cost of a year’s membership. \nThe discounts for the Training Course are: \n\n£50 off for Doctors Members\n£25 off for Resident Doctors/Nurses/Midwives/AHP\, etc.\n\n\n \n \n \n \nLearning Objectives\n\nBy the end of this course\, participants will be able to:\nDescribe the clinical indications\, evidence base and safety profile of Dilatation and Evacuation (D&E).\nIdentify appropriate cervical preparation methods\, instrumentation and anaesthetic approaches used in D&E procedures.\nDemonstrate the key technical steps involved in D&E using simulation models.\nRecognise and discuss the management of complications\, including haemorrhage\, cervical injury and uterine perforation.\nApply clinical decision-making in simulated scenarios related to mid-trimester uterine evacuation.\nReflect on the professional\, ethical and communication considerations involved in providing abortion care.\n\nWhat the Course Covers\nThe programme includes a combination of lectures\, interactive discussion and practical simulation sessions covering: \n\nClinical overview of second trimester abortion\nOverview of D&E technique and instrumentation\nCervical preparation and procedural planning\nHands-on simulation training using procedural models\nDiagnosis and management of procedural complications\nIntegrated clinical simulation scenarios\nHuman factors and teamworking in complex clinical situations\nAftercare and post-procedure management\nDiscussion of the practical considerations involved in developing D&E services\n\nParticipants will work in small groups during simulation sessions\, allowing time for discussion\, questions and personalised feedback from faculty. \nTraining and Curriculum Alignment\nThis course supports postgraduate training within both: \n\nObstetrics & Gynaecology (RCOG Core Curriculum 2024)\nCommunity Sexual & Reproductive Health (CSRH Curriculum – College of Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare)\n\nSimulation-based procedural training is explicitly recommended within both curricula as part of the development of clinical and procedural competence. Participation in this course may contribute evidence towards relevant Capabilities in Practice (CiPs)\, procedural skills and reflective learning within Resident Doctors’ training portfolios. A detailed curriculum mapping document is available here: \n\nDownload D&E Course Alignment with the RCOG O&G 2024 Core Curriculum\nDownload D&E Course Alignment with the CoSRH CSRH Curriculum\n\nThe course is also relevant and useful for those enrolled and working towards completing the Abortion Care Specialist Modules (ACSM) that we deliver in partnership with the College of Sexual and Reproductive Healthcare (CoSRH) \nStudy Leave and Educational Funding\nResident Doctors applying for study leave or educational funding may request a letter of support from BSACP outlining the relevance of the course to postgraduate training curricula. \nPlease contact us: admin@bsacp.org.uk \nWhat Previous Participants Said\nFeedback from previous BSACP D&E courses has highlighted the value of expert faculty\, practical simulation training and open discussion of complex clinical issues. \nPrevious participants particularly valued and mentioned: \n\n“Very detailed and informative. I’ve learned a lot.”\n“I really valued the passion you all share.”\n“I loved the interaction with the faculty and simulation.”\n“I feel more confident about the procedure.”\n“Very experienced speakers\, passionate about their job.”\n“The discussion around complications.”\n\nMany attendees suggested that more time for hands-on simulation would be beneficial\, which has informed the design of this full-day course format. \nWho Should Attend\nThis course may be particularly valuable for: \n\nResident Doctors in Obstetrics & Gynaecology\nResident Doctors in Community Sexual & Reproductive Health\nConsultants or SAS doctors seeking skills refresh or service development knowledge\nClinicians involved in abortion care\, miscarriage management or early pregnancy services\n\nEnquiries\nFor questions about the course please contact us: admin@bsacp.org.uk \n Terms and Conditions of Sale Terms and Conditions of Sale for Events1.
