ST3–5 Intermediate Course

The BSACP ST3–5 Intermediate Course is a one-day training programme designed for doctors progressing through Obstetrics and Gynaecology training. Developed in partnership with NHS England and endorsed by NHS England and the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG), this course supports Resident Doctors in developing the knowledge, clinical judgement and confidence required to provide abortion care at an intermediate level of training. The course builds on foundational knowledge and focuses on the application of clinical skills, second trimester care, and the delivery of abortion services within a wider healthcare context.

About the Course

This course supports Resident Doctors in developing a deeper understanding of abortion care as part of routine clinical practice. It focuses on the clinical, practical and service-level aspects of care, including second trimester uterine evacuation, consultation skills and the organisation of services. The programme includes teaching on:

  • Consultation skills and addressing abortion-related stigma
  • Abortion care within the independent sector
  • Obstetric safety and second trimester uterine evacuation
  • Service development, including setting up second trimester abortion services
  • Patient experience and perspectives
  • Training pathways within abortion care

Learning Approach

This course is delivered as a structured training day combining:

  • Lectures to explore clinical and service-level topics
  • Interactive discussion to support clinical reasoning and decision-making
  • Case-based learning to reflect real-world clinical scenarios

The course provides an opportunity for Resident Doctors to consolidate knowledge, develop clinical confidence and engage with more complex aspects of abortion care.

  • Resident Doctors in Obstetrics and Gynaecology (ST3–5)
  • Resident Doctors in Community Sexual and Reproductive Health (ST3–5)
