ST1–2 Abortion Care Study Day

The ST1–2 Abortion Care Study Day is a one-day training programme designed for doctors in the early stages of Obstetrics and Gynaecology training. Developed in partnership with NHS England and endorsed by NHS England and the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG), this course provides a structured introduction to abortion care within the context of specialty training. The course supports Resident Doctors in developing foundational knowledge, clinical understanding, and confidence in abortion care, aligned with curriculum expectations and clinical practice.

About the Course

This course introduces abortion care as a core component of Obstetrics and Gynaecology training and clinical practice. It provides an overview of the clinical, legal, social, and professional aspects of abortion care, supporting Resident Doctors in understanding both the practical delivery of care and the wider context in which it is provided. The programme includes teaching on:

  • Medical and surgical abortion in early pregnancy
  • Abortion care within NHS and independent sector services
  • UK abortion law and provision
  • Abortion stigma and respectful, patient-centred care
  • Global perspectives on abortion care
  • Complications of abortion and when to seek senior support
  • Contraception after abortion
  • Training pathways and careers in abortion care

Learning Approach

This course is delivered as a structured training day combining:

  • Lectures to introduce key clinical and professional concepts
  • Interactive discussion to explore clinical scenarios and experiences
  • Expert-led teaching from clinicians working in abortion care

The course provides a supportive environment for early-stage Resident Doctors to engage with abortion care and build confidence in their knowledge and understanding.

This course is designed for:

  • Resident Doctors in Obstetrics and Gynaecology (ST1–2)
  • Resident Doctors in Community Sexual and Reproductive Health (ST1–2)

It may also be relevant for Doctors in related specialties (e.g., General Practice, Emergency Medicine, Genitourinary Medicine) seeking an introduction to abortion care.

How this course fits into training

This course forms part of BSACP’s structured education pathway. It provides a foundation for Resident Doctors and is often undertaken early in specialty training to support the development of core knowledge and confidence in abortion care.
